It is hard to keep track of all the events around the world in the 90’ies. It is just as hard to find The Dane or traces of him. In a world that was returning to war and violence, he seems to have turned into a shadow.

The fall of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain wasn’t followed by peace and a prosperous future as some might have thought. The cold war that had kept the superpowers in a sort of stalemate was replaced på hotter conflicts in all parts of the world.

You will have to read about the causes and effects of these conflicts in other places than here. It will be too much to cover and it is not my purpose here. I will leave it for now with a small philosophical note on how it sometimes seems that certain countries and governments can only uphold themselves by having a sharply defined enemy. Maybe national states can somehow only really be defined by what the people in that state agree on hating or forgetting. And maybe – just maybe it is about time that we try to evolve away from the notion of national states.

The Dane isn’t easy to find or even to look for. I didn’t (and don’t) really know which side in the conflicts to look for him. I don’t even know if he chose a side or just followed the money. A lot of this is still guesses and hunches.

I imagine that the Dane still saw himself in opposition to the USA, which he must have seen as the greatest evil in his life. It just doesn’t help a lot.

The obvious place to look is the Gulf War. The first one that is. The one where Iraq invaded Kuwait just to be kicked out by American forces just as fast. I have looked, but so far I haven’t found anything. But this was at the time where he could have been in Sudan as I wrote in that episode.

The USA wasn’t officially involved in wars in the next few years until they intervened in the former Yugoslavia along with the United Nations. This wasn’t until 1995 and 1996 which leaves a couple of years since he was in Sudan.

Some of the other places I have looked – but with no luck yet are Chechnya, Yemen and the countries in Africa next to Sudan.

Chechnya is interesting because the war involved Russia and a muslim population that had the support of some groups of Arabic Mujahideen. We know that The Dane has worked for the Soviet Union and therefore could be working for Russia. We also know that he was in Sudan where he might have worked with or for militant muslim groups. He could have chosen both sides in this conflict. The war in Chechnya was gruesome and there were a lot of bestial acts that could have been performed by The Dane.

A large part of the first war in Chechnya revolved around the siege of the capital city Grozny. It resembled the war between the Soviet Union and Afghanistan. It was a long affair and a real winner was never found. It didn’t end until a truce in 1996 was turned into a peace treaty in 1997.

There are a lot of press photos and other materials from that war, but so far I haven’t been able to find The Dane in any of it. To be honest he might have slipped by my scrutinizing eyes because it is a lot harder to find a specific caucasian male among other caucasian males as opposed to finding him surrounded by Vietnamese guys.

I have found many pictures of men that could be him, but every time I have ended up  discarding them. Either the nose was too flat, round, small og it was something with the eyes that didn’t quite fit.

The thought that he might have had his appearance surgically altered has changed my mind, but I don’t think he has. He wouldn’t really have needed to. Nobody seems to have known much about his existence and certainly not about how he looked. So why would he have bothered changing anything.

Chechnya sort of won the first war and got their independence from Russia. They did however lose the next war against Putin’s armed forces in 1999 and 2000. This might have caused the

disappearance of some photos and documents and could be the reason that I haven’t found any trace of The Dane here?

Yemen, Sudan and the other countries in that region are also good places to look for The Dane – as I also have done. The Red Sea is the only thing separating Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula and the countries on the African continent. The area has been a warzone for many years and we have all heard the horrific news from Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan. This would be a perfect place for a mercenary to make a living if not a fortune.

The Dane was in Sudan or South Sudan

in 1991, but I don’t know if he stayed there. It is hard to find any stories that are worth believing because they are filtered through a propaganda machine in each country.

Another interesting fact is that Osama Bin Laden was in Sudan until 1996 when the government sent him back to Afghanistan after strong pressure from the USA. I don’t think that The Dane ever joined Al Qaeda, but I imagine that they would have welcomed his expertise and vast knowledge of guerilla warfare in the mountains of Afghanistan.

In 1992 a bomb goes of in a hotel in Yemen killing an Austrian Tourist and a hotel worker. The Hotel was supposed to be occupied by American soldiers and officials on their way to Somalia. This is by many considered to be the first real act of terrorism commited by Al Qaeda.

They continued with other attacks through the 90’s. The most well known of these attacks is probably the one on the World Trade Center in 1993 where 6 people died. Next in that line must be the simultanious bombings of the American embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Tanzania in 1998. These bombings cost the lives of 224 people of which 12 were Americans.

The objective of all the attacks was always the USA. But on the other hand we are talking about terrorist attacks with mainly civilian victims. I don’t know if The Dane has anything to do with these attacks, if he helped plan them, execute them or maybe even helped supply the explosives. Maybe the thought of terror doesn’t bother him. After all that is what he writes about in his diary. The use of fear and terror to scare the soldiers of the opposing side. That is his thing.

I sincerely believe that The Dane is out there somewhere. I don’t know what he is doing or if he is retired by now, but I do hope that you will help me look for him. Any good ideas are welcome.

After the second attack on the World Trade Center in 2001 the Americans went all in on the war against terror. They wanted to cut off the head of the snake. So they killed Osama Bin Laden, but news heads grew in its place.

In the years that followed, the hunt for terrorists was on and you can’t blame people like The Dane for going underground and sitting this one out. The best way to find him might be to go back in time and look at the time before 2001 again. There just has to be more.
